How to Improve Your Business Credit Score in 90 Days
A week-by-week plan to clean up your file, add reporting tradelines, and move your score before your next application.

Business credit moves faster than personal credit. Payment behavior is reported monthly, utilization updates with your statement cycle, and a corrected error can lift a score in weeks. Ninety days of deliberate work is genuinely enough to change the terms you are offered on your next application.
Days 1–14: See the file and fix what is wrong
- 1Pull your reports from Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business. They will not match — each has different contributors.
- 2Verify the basics: legal name, address, phone, SIC/NAICS code, and years in business. Inconsistencies split your history across duplicate files.
- 3Dispute anything inaccurate in writing with documentation. Bureaus generally respond within 30 days.
- 4Check for a duplicate D-U-N-S number and request a merge if one exists.
- 5Confirm no closed accounts are reporting as open with balances.
Errors are far more common on business files than personal ones because reporting is voluntary and matching is imperfect. This step alone resolves a meaningful share of unexplained low scores.
Days 15–30: Attack utilization
Revolving utilization is the fastest-moving input you control. Get every revolving balance under 30% of its limit, and under 15% if you can. Two tactics work quickly: make a mid-cycle payment before the statement date so a lower balance is what gets reported, and request limit increases on accounts in good standing, which lowers utilization without paying anything down.
If balances are spread across several high-cost cards, consolidating into a single term loan with a fixed payment both lowers reported revolving utilization and makes the cash flow predictable.
Days 31–60: Add reporting tradelines
- Ask your three largest suppliers whether they report to the business bureaus, and request net-30 terms if you are paying on delivery.
- Open two or three additional accounts with vendors known to report.
- Add one financial tradeline — a business card or a line of credit — since lender-reported accounts carry more weight than vendor accounts.
- Pay every one of them early. D&B's PAYDEX rewards early payment specifically; paying exactly on the due date caps the score around 80.
- Keep the oldest accounts open. Age of file is a scoring factor you cannot buy back.
Days 61–90: Tighten the operating picture
Underwriters read more than a score. In the final month, focus on what they will see in your bank statements: no overdrafts or NSF items, positive average daily balance, and all business income flowing through the business account rather than a personal one. Bring filings current — outstanding tax liens and judgments are public records that appear on business reports and outweigh almost everything else you do.
- 1Eliminate overdrafts entirely for the final 90 days before applying.
- 2Raise your average daily balance, even modestly — it is a direct proxy for stability.
- 3Resolve or set up a documented payment plan for any tax liability.
- 4Reconcile your books monthly and have three months of statements ready to send.
- 5Avoid stacking new short-term advances, which underwriters read as distress.
What to expect
Ninety days of this work typically moves a thin or mid-range file into a materially better bracket — larger offers, lower cost, and less reliance on a personal guarantee. It will not erase a recent bankruptcy or a fresh tax lien; those need time as well as behavior. But for the large majority of businesses, the constraint is not a bad file — it is an incomplete one.
